High in the Rif Mountains of northern Morocco, Chefchaouen is a small town painted in every shade of blue. Founded in 1471, it was for centuries a quiet mountain refuge, and its medina remains calm, friendly and easy to explore on foot – a peaceful pause between the energy of Fes and the big cities. Here is everything you need to plan your visit.

At a glance. Location: Rif Mountains, about 4 hours from Fes and 4–5 hours from Casablanca · Ideal stay: 1–2 nights · Best months: April–June and September–October · Getting around: on foot (the medina is car-free) · Best light: early morning.

Why is Chefchaouen blue?

Nobody agrees on a single answer. Some say the blue was introduced by Jewish families who settled here in the 1930s, as a symbol of the sky and heaven; others say it keeps mosquitoes away or the houses cool in summer. Today the townspeople repaint their walls every year, and the blue has become the town’s signature.

Best things to do in Chefchaouen

1. Wander the blue medina

The joy of Chefchaouen is simply to wander: steep lanes, flowerpots on blue steps, small squares and cats asleep in doorways. Go early in the morning, before the day visitors arrive, for the best light and the quietest streets.

2. Outa el-Hammam square and the kasbah

The heart of the medina is a shady square lined with cafés, facing the red-walled 15th-century kasbah and the octagonal minaret of the Grand Mosque. Visit the kasbah’s garden and small museum, and climb its tower for a view over the rooftops.

3. Sunset from the Spanish Mosque

A 20–30 minute walk up the hillside east of the medina leads to a small mosque built by the Spanish in the 1920s. From here, the whole blue town spreads out below the mountains – the most beautiful viewpoint at sunset.

4. Ras el-Maa spring

Just outside the medina walls, the spring of Ras el-Maa runs down from the mountain, where local women still wash clothes in the cold water. It is a lovely, shaded place to pause on the way to the Spanish Mosque.

5. Hike to the Akchour waterfalls

About 45 minutes’ drive from town, in Talassemtane National Park, a trail follows a river through a green gorge to a series of waterfalls and pools. The walk to the first falls takes around an hour; the full hike to God’s Bridge, a natural rock arch, takes longer. Bring good shoes and swimwear in summer.

6. Shop for local crafts

Chefchaouen is known for woollen blankets and djellabas woven in the Rif, goat cheese from the mountains and simple pottery. Prices are generally lower and the atmosphere more relaxed than in the big cities’ souks.

7. Taste the food of the Rif

Try the fresh goat cheese of the region, bissara (a fava-bean soup) and a slow-cooked tagine on a rooftop terrace with a view of the blue houses and the mountains.

How many nights in Chefchaouen?

One night is enough to see the town at its quietest – the evening and the early morning – and we include it on most of our northern routes. Two nights let you add the Akchour waterfalls or simply enjoy the slower pace; our 12-day and 14-day tours include two nights here.

How to get there

Chefchaouen has no airport or train station. On our tours, we drive there from Casablanca via Rabat (about 5 hours with stops) or from Tangier (about 2.5 hours), and continue to Fes via the Roman ruins of Volubilis and Meknes (about 4.5 hours). See our 10-day Morocco itinerary and the best things to do in Fes.

Where to stay

Chefchaouen has charming small riads and guesthouses rather than large luxury hotels. We choose the most comfortable addresses in or just outside the medina, with good beds, rooftop terraces and views – and arrange porters for your luggage, as cars cannot enter the old town.
