A night in the Sahara is the moment most travellers dream of when they think of Morocco – and for good reason. Riding a camel over the dunes at sunset, dinner by the fire and a sky crowded with stars are unforgettable. But the desert is far from the main cities, and a little planning makes a big difference. Here is how to plan a Sahara trip in Morocco, from our team with family roots at the edge of the dunes.
At a glance. Best dunes: Erg Chebbi near Merzouga · From Marrakech: about 9–10 hours’ drive, best split over 2 days · From Fes: about 7.5 hours · Ideal stay: 2 nights · Best season: October–April · Luxury camps: real beds, en-suite bathrooms, private dinners.
Where to go: Merzouga, Zagora or Agafay?

- Merzouga and Erg Chebbi: the classic Sahara, with golden dunes up to around 150 metres high. This is where we take all our guests.
- Zagora and Erg Chigaga: Zagora is closer to Marrakech but its dunes are small; Erg Chigaga’s are impressive but reached only by a long 4×4 track from M’Hamid.
- Agafay: a stony desert 45 minutes from Marrakech – lovely for one evening, but not the sand dunes of the Sahara.
How many nights in the desert?
One night gives you sunset and sunrise. Two nights let you relax and explore: a 4×4 day to visit nomads, the Gnawa village of Khamlia and the dunes around Merzouga, with time to enjoy the camp. We recommend two nights from October to April, and one night in the heat of midsummer.
How to get there

The Sahara is too far for a day trip. From Marrakech, the road crosses the High Atlas to Ait Ben Haddou and the Dades Valley, where we stop for a night before continuing past the Todra Gorges to Merzouga. From Fes, the route goes through the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas and the Ziz Valley in one long, scenic day. Many of our tours enter the desert from Fes and leave towards Marrakech, so you never drive the same road twice.
Choosing a luxury desert camp

Desert camps range from simple tents with shared bathrooms to luxurious private camps. A good luxury camp offers spacious tents with real beds and quality linen, an en-suite bathroom with hot water, a fine dinner and a quiet location away from other camps. All our tours use a private luxury tent with an en-suite bathroom. Compare the options in the 8 best luxury desert camps in Merzouga.

When to go

October to April is the best season: warm days and cool nights. In December and January, nights can drop close to freezing, but camps provide heavy blankets and the days are sunny. From June to August, daytime temperatures often exceed 40 °C, so we plan early camel rides and shorter stays. See the best time to visit Morocco.
What to pack
